How much does a dietitian consultation cost in Australia?

Initial consultations are $195 for 50 minutes, and follow-up consultations are $90 for 20-30 minutes. Medicare rebates are available if you have a GP Management Plan or Team Care Arrangement. We are also recognised providers with major private health insurance funds. Note: prices increase to $220 (initial) and $110 (follow-up) on 1 July 2026 — bookings made before then keep current pricing, even for appointments scheduled after 1 July.

What is the difference between a Dietitian and Nutritionist?

Dietitians are regulated and must meet strict standards as set out by the National Alliance of Self Regulating Health Professions (NASRHP). All dietitians have graduated with an accredited dietetics degree from an Australian university or studied overseas and undergone strict examination processes. Dietitians with the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential commit to ongoing training and education throughout their careers. As a profession, nutritionists are not regulated in Australia under NASRHP or certified under a single regulatory body. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist regardless of their qualifications. It's important to check the credentials of your healthcare provider before making an appointment. You can verify whether someone is an Accredited Practising Dietitian by searching the Dietitians Australia member directory. Look for the letters 'APD' after their name.

How can I get a rebate for my appointment fee?

Anyone on a GP Chronic Disease Management Plan can access 5 allied health appointments per calendar year which are subsidised by Medicare. If you have a chronic medical condition (such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, or a condition that has been — or is likely to be — present for six months or more), your GP can refer you to an allied health professional like a dietitian as part of your care. Under this plan, you may be eligible for up to five subsidised allied health visits per calendar year. The Medicare rebate doesn't cover the full cost of the appointment, but it does reduce what you pay out of pocket. If you are covered for Dietetics under your private health fund, you may be able to claim a rebate.

A telehealth consultation is a video or phone call with your dietitian — no different in content to an in-person appointment, just from the comfort of your own home (or car, or lunch break at work). You'll discuss your health history, current eating patterns, goals, and any relevant medical information. You'll receive a link or call details before your appointment.
